In today’s world, where environmental consciousness and sustainability have become the buzzwords, individuals like Kristina Todorova stand out as a beacon of hope for a better society. Kristina, a final year student at the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and Food, is not just an ordinary student, but an extraordinary advocate for agriculture sustainability, circular economy, and social inclusion. Her inspiring journey as a mushroom producer and a member of the NGO Ekovita demonstrates her unwavering commitment to creating a more sustainable and inclusive agricultural landscape.

Mushroom Maestro
Kristina’s journey into agriculture sustainability began with her passion for mushrooms. Based in Negotino, she has ventured into the production of a variety of mushrooms, including Oyster mushroom, Shiitake mushroom, Lion’s mane, Reishi mushroom, and Maitake mushroom. She understands that mushrooms are not just a delicious addition to our diets, but also play a vital role in promoting sustainability. All the theoretical and practical trainings are being held in Veshje, a village near Negotino.

Mushrooms are known for their ability to thrive in less-than-ideal conditions and can be grown on various organic substrates, making them a sustainable choice. Her approach to mushroom cultivation is not only about producing a diverse range of mushrooms, but also about utilizing organic waste materials which are later processed by the California worms, and as such can be used for fertilization in horticultural production, contributing to a circular economy.

Circular Economy Champion
One of Kristina’s primary goals is to become a circular economy producer. She believes in minimizing waste and utilizing resources efficiently. Mushroom production not only provides healthy food options but also ensures that organic waste is converted into valuable products. By reusing and recycling resources, her work showcases the potential of circular economy practices in agriculture.

Insect Farming for Animal Food
Beyond mushrooms, Kristina is a pioneer in the production of insects, including roaches, mealworms, superworms and at one time she used to breed domestic silk moths. Her vision is to produce sustainable animal food through insect farming. Insects are a highly nutritious and eco-friendly source of animal feed, reducing the environmental impact of conventional livestock farming. Kristina’s commitment to insect farming reflects her dedication to finding innovative and sustainable solutions in agriculture.

Social Inclusion Advocate
Todorova is not just an entrepreneur – she is also an advocate for social inclusion. Recently, she and her coworkers have been working on the Mushroom Network Project. Its main goal is to give marginalized groups of people the chance to work and develop in the agriculture industry, including food production in times of crisis. Through her support of skill development, Kristina is contributing to the creation of a society that is more fair and inclusive. They are open for collaboration on projects, initiatives and activities related to conservation and sustainability of the environment.

Renewable Energy Initiatives
Her commitment to sustainability doesn’t stop with agriculture. Kristina is also actively involved in projects related to the usage of solar energy and other sustainable energy sources. Her holistic approach to sustainability extends to every aspect of her work and life, emphasizing the need for responsible energy practices to mitigate climate change. As an example, in Ekovita there is a Solar Heater that the members use for cooking on solar energy.

In conclusion, Todorova’s dedication to agriculture sustainability, circular economy, social inclusion, and renewable energy sets an inspiring example for a better society. Her passion and unwavering commitment to creating a more sustainable and inclusive agricultural landscape show that individuals as well as small organizations can be powerful agents of change. As we face the challenges of the 21st century, we can all draw inspiration from their work and strive to make a positive impact in our own ways, contributing to a more sustainable and inclusive world.
